Black Cats and Feline Reputations

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:16 pm

Most people in the United States have heard that if a black cat crosses your path, bad luck will follow. Most people who respond to such an event by saying something like “uh-oh” don’t follow up and blame the cat for the fact that a few days later they are, say, fired from their job or trip over the dog and sprain an ankle. But the notion persists, as do many other folk beliefs about cats-as-trouble. Most of these notions arose (in the West) during the late Middle Ages, persisting well into the seventeenth and even the eighteenth centuries. They come down to us today, happily, for the most part filtered by time and reason into paler, less scary versions. In fact, in England it is good luck if a black cat crosses your path. But Europeans in earlier times found plenty of reasons to be truly horrible to cats, especially black ones.

Black cats were not only nocturnal like all cats, skulking around in the dark as if guilty of something, and they were often indifferent to humans, even haughty, but also they had the misfortune of being black. For Europeans in early times, black was-simply-bad. It was associated with the underworld, with night (when bad things like werewolves were on the prowl), with the dark forests where dangerous spirits and crazy people bent on mayhem lurked. It was a scary world, where Satan himself was a constant threat. He and his dark minions practiced the black arts and were always looking to traduce innocent souls into evil.* The world, back in late medieval times, was also full of somewhat attenuated beliefs based on ancient times. Rome’s Diana the Huntress was associated with cats and later in her career morphed a little bit into Hecate, goddess of the underworld and given to dark doings. Also she was associated with the moon, that unreliable and protean body in the night sky. Cats were awarded these attributes.

Early on, the Catholic Church tried to dispel any such pagan notions, discouraging belief in the witchcraft that appears to have always been part of life in most preliterate societies. But late in the Middle Ages when universal satisfaction with the teachings and workings of the Church began to decay, scapegoats were needed. In 1233, Pope Gregory IX explained that black cats were satanic and suddenly the Christian world was overrun with witches and their “familiars,” which is to say the black cats that the witches sent forth to do harm to people. Indeed, witches often turned into black cats. And witches of course were agents of the devil. Thousands of people, mostly women, were burned at the stake along with their cats. Putative witches were typically tortured, and they readily admitted their guilt to stop the torture, even repeating various totally made-up incantations. Thus the virulence of witchcraft was proved, leading to a kind of mass hysteria in which yet more witches were put to the torch. Meanwhile, with such a bad rap, cats of all colors were persecuted.

In one common event, they were hung in bags that avid medieval sportsmen would attack with lances. Indeed, killing cats by one means or another was a highly popular pastime. In these exercises, there was no special emphasis on black cats-any cat would do. From this era comes the old saying “no room to swing a cat,” another sportsmen’s amusement. Possibly harking back to the Egyptian belief that cats were associated with fecundity, some medieval European farmers would bury a cat-alive- near each field they planted, to ensure the growth of the crops. In one macabre case, English archaeologists in the nineteenth century found the remains of thousands of cats buried by the adoring ancient Egyptians, and shipped them back to Albion to be ground up and used as fertilizer.

Mistreatment of cats in this era took many forms. As James Serpell of the University of Pennsylvania describes it, On feast days as a symbolic means of driving out the Devil, cats, especially black ones, were captured, tortured, thrown onto bonfires, set alight and chased through the streets, impaled on spits and roasted alive, burned at the stake, plunged into boiling water, whipped to death, and hurled from the tops of tall buildings; and all, it seems, in an atmosphere of extreme festive merriment.

Europe was not alone in the world in its distaste for all that cats stood for. Evil cats were common features of some Oriental folklore. In Japan, huge vampire cats took the form of human females and sucked the blood and strength from unwitting men. The Japanese used to cut off cats’ tails, believing the tail to be the seat of their malevolence. On the other hand, cats were looked upon with great favor in many Japanese monasteries, where bobtail cats called temple cats or kimono cats were thought to exemplify much of the wisdom passed on by the Buddha. And today, the Japanese have given the world the manekineko or beckoning cat, which can be found in many Asian restaurants and homes in this country as well as Japan and the rest of Asia.

The ceramic figure, something like a children’s illustration, recalls a cat that legendarily stood at the entrance of a famous temple beckoning a feudal lord to come inside. A lightning bolt struck where the lord had been standing and thereafter the beckoning cat was taken to be an incarnation of the goddess of mercy. It is also said to be good for businesses, beckoning customers, and for happiness and harmony-a long way from the cat vampires of old. Today in the West the association of cats with witches is memorialized in Hallowe’en costumery and iconography wherein witches on broomsticks ride across the disc of the full moon, while cartoonish black cats with malevolently arched backs spit and hiss in the foreground. On the last day of October, diminutive witches with black pointy hats will now turn up on doorsteps cheerfully calling for tricks or treats. And, of course, at least 278 zillion people have read about Harry Potter whose witch-filled world is also populated by kneazles, catlike creatures with spots and big ears, that appear to be mostly benevolent. In Islamic countries, cats are and were much admired, especially since the prophet Mohammed was particularly fond-and respectful-of cats, once cutting off his sleeve rather than awakening the cat who was sleeping on it. On the other hand, most Muslims find dogs objectionable. Dogs are eaten in many Asian restaurants, but I know of no place where cats are part of the normal diet.

The idea that a black cat crossing your path is bad luck is a southern European and Irish superstition, exported to the Americas. The English, as noted earlier, consider such an event good luck, and here and there local superstitions suggest that the appearance of a black cat in the presence of a pregnant woman assures a healthy offspring. Cats, and especially black ones, seem to have enjoyed a remarkable power: to be (in one place or another or at one time or another) all things to all people. Even at the height of cat persecution, plenty of cats lived comfortably with families who valued them for their help in vermin control. Indeed, in some places in England, if someone killed your cat, he would be forced to provide you with a pile of grain as high as the cat was long.

I myself had a black cat for several years. I did not seek him out. Instead, two women in the office where I worked at the time thought it would be funny (I suppose) or somehow fitting for them to present me with a large carton at the end of one October day-it was a few days before Hallowe’en-in which there sat a lanky young black cat with a look in his eyes of what seemed low-level outrage. The carton itself was decorated with various kinds of feline graffiti. I was unable to think of a graceful, or even ungraceful, way to refuse this gift, but the thought of schlepping the elaborately decorated carton to Grand Central Terminal in New York City and boarding a crowded train for the hour’s ride to my town, then arriving at my door and trying to explain to my then wife how we had come to have a cat and then introducing the cat to our dog while our three young daughters enthusiastically mauled it… well, it was not an auspicious beginning.

I was aware that black cats had a reputation for bringing bad luck, but as a science editor I was not going to worry about such nonsense. We found it difficult for reasons I don’t recall to come up with a name for this interloper, so finally, in a burst of paternal authority (this was the late 1960s) and stunning imagination I unilaterally named him Cat. Science or no, I was tempted to look up a few superstitions about black cats and found, of course, that I should be careful about him crossing my path, and if he did the antidote was something like walking around the point where I had seen him twelve times, then heading off backwards in my original direction. I pronounced myself grateful for my exposure to science, thinking how time-consuming it would be for me to feel I needed the antidote, what with Cat strolling though the house day in and day out. Imagine the superstitious life: you would have hardly any time for anything else.

Anyway, I came to know Cat and to be very fond of him, admiring all the things about cats that all cat people admire, though if he ever caught a mouse and dispatched it (or a bird, for that matter), I was unaware of it. I did not consider this a failing-just Cat’s amiable and, I thought, admirable approach to life. He took things easy and stayed out of trouble. Like most people, I have experienced plenty of misfortunes, mostly minor ones, but it has never occurred to me to blame any of them on Cat, who was a really good guy. One day, in his late teens, with out having shown much by way of signs of aging, he simply stopped being alive.

I have since learned that nowadays it is not always easy to obtain a black cat from an animal shelter in the days near Halloween. This is because some of the good people who devote themselves to such places do not want to run the risk of someone taking a black cat off to some horrid altar and performing lethal satanic rituals with it. This, in the twenty-first century!

It is a sad commentary to think that such a precious and complicated organ as the human brain, capable of designing a laser, or a symphony, or a democratic constitution, or of divining the common molecular basis for all of life on this planet, can still be so foully and stupidly misused.

Not all superstitions about cats that persist today are malevolent, of course; most of them are positive and harmless, if a bit silly. Upon reflection, it does seem strange for an animal whose evolutionary history is so steadfastly catlike-you have to go back many millions of years to find a cat ancestor that doesn’t look and act unmistakably like a cat-to be assigned so variegated an array of meanings. The human propensity to imagine the supernatural or the anthropocentric and pin it on perfectly innocent animals is astonishing. Snakes have, as noted, gotten an especially bad rap (aside from the fact that some are poisonous) for conning Eve, and other offenses. Most American Indian cultures believe the presence of an owl, and especially the hooting of an owl, presages a death. Who doesn’t-deep down-believe that the bluebird brings happiness? Dogs have both suffered and been esteemed in their symbolic essences. Horses come off pretty well in this regard: malevolent horses are rarely seen in human folklore or in the tribunals of people of faith.

Cats and dogs are considered either contemptible or splendid in a kaleidoscope of ways and for a host of reasons. The Church of Rome, for example, found dogs to be despicable because of their licentiousness but also heroic for their loyalty. The Church held cats in some contempt (not only were they licentious but they were noisy about it) until a papal successor to Pope Gregory IX began raising them. Then attitudes toward cats slowly changed to mostly positive. Today, in the United States, more cats are pets than dogs.

We have been talking about cats as seen in the mirror that many people carry around, imagining that their own reflections project some truth about the rest of nature. These are what Michael Sims, the scholar of the remarkable tales of archy and mehitabel, calls “symbolic delusions.” It seems to me that all such notions-complimentary ones as well as utterly insulting ones, none of which has been solicited by cats themselves-are, if anything useful at all, a version of a Rorschach test, those ink blot examinations that humans use to try to figure out other humans. But this is a book about real cats, so the rest of it will endeavor to tell the story of cats largely from their own point of view, as best we can perceive that.

The Start of Television

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:11 am

A six year-old commented, “TV is so necessary. What would I do without it?” I told him TV is a rather new invention and the idea of it dawned on its makers about a century ago. It is a stirring thought that something playing such an important role in a little child’s life is so young, as an invention.

Television is the third invention after electricity and radio to have a life-shaping, magnetic influence on the masses. The word television loosely means to see far. While public and commercial television stations address masses, cable stations try to attract audiences with specific tastes. In addition to augmenting programs, security and surveillance problems are handled in schools, businesses, and hospitals through closed-circuit television.

Since many scientists were involved in the way the television technology has evolved, we cannot call any one person its inventor. Television was first thought to be possible as early as the 1800′s when it was understood that radio communication signals could be sent through the air.

In 1831, Michael Faraday and Joseph Henry were the first scientists to experiment with electromagnetism, therefore establishing a start for electrical communication. They were followed by Samuel Morse in 1844 with his invention of the telegraph and then by Abbe Giovanni Caselli an Italian, who first sent images over a distance using a pantelegraph. In 1873 two the Englishmen, May and Smith, used selenium and light with the idea to transform images into electrical signals. After George Carey’s system of selenium cells in 1880, Paul Nipkow patented the first mechanical television scanner in Germany. Marconi’s morse code by wireless also played a role in the development of television.

In 1906, Lee DeForest developed a vacuum tube to amplify signals. Then using the German Carl Ferdinand Braun’s cathode-ray tube invented in 1897 with the Nipkow disk, Boris Rosing of Russia invented a system as the world’s first television in 1907. In 1908, A.A.Campbell-Swinton of Scotland came up with the proposal of an all electronic television. In 1922, Philo T. Farnsworth, a sixteen year-old US citizen, developed an electrical scanning system. At about the same time in 1923, Iconoscope–an electronic camera tube–was patented by Vladimir Zworykin, who also produced the Kinescope, a picture display tube. John Logie Baird was the first to get an actual television picture, but Zworykin took the first patent for color television, being the one person who had made the most contribution during the first developmental stages of television.

In 1927, the pictures of Herbert Hoover, US Secretary of commerce, were sent over two hundred miles from Washington to New York, and in 1928 W2XBS became RCA’s first television station in New York City. This was when the first television star, Felix the Cat, was created.

The first television drama “The Queen’s Messenger” also came to the screen in 1928. Still during this year, John Logie Baird sent London’s images to New York via shortwave. The first television commercial was in the air in 1930 by Charles Jenkins. Also in 1930, BBC started its regular programming. In 1931, VE9EC–Canada’s first tv station–and in the USA, RCA from the Empire State Building began transmissions on an experimental basis.

In 1935, France began its television transmissions from the Eiffel Tower and Germany established a three day-a-week transmission service. CBC in Canada was formed in 1936. Right that year, Allen B. Du Mont manufactured the first TV set for sale to the North American public.

An interesting highlight in television transmission happened during World War II. As soon as the war started in 1939, September 1, BBC television stopped broadcasting in the middle of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon and in 1945 resumed the cartoon’s showing, starting where it left off in 1939, which makes one wonder what the British children thought of the broadcasters.

By the time the first color television transmission started in 1951, there were over one hundred television stations in the USA. In 1979 there were three hundred million television sets flickering on and off, and by the year 2000, about one and three quarters billion television sets were estimated to exist in operation worldwide.

With the arrival of high-definition and plasma TV’s and the talk of computerized TV’s or computer and TV combinations, twenty-first century is promising a great deal more of entertainment and education to its viewers worldwide. In bringing the cultures together, let’s hope we make the best use of it.

Go Kart Engine Repair – Ignition System Diagnostics and Repair Part 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:26 am

Go Kart Engine Diagnostics: Solid State Ignition Failure Detection

I have had a couple of times where I had some dramatic failures occur on my go kart engines. One time I had a chain snap and the chain made a ferocious clunk and then fell off the go kart. The funny thing is that the engine kept running, and I had to shut it off.

I replaced the chain and ran into a peculiar problem. The engine would not start.

This is where most of us, with NO engine experience just throw up our hands and kick the go kart and go away. Then we throw it in the back of the pickup and bring it over to “Smokin Joes Lawnmower Repair.” There we spend about $200 to have the engine fixed.

I am here to tell you forget about going to “Smokin Joes.

First of all a basic understanding of ignition systems is required. (I am assuming that you understand the Otto Cycle or 4 cycle engine theory, so I will dispense with that SnoozeVille explanation)

Ignition systems are basically partial generators. The flywheel has a magnet, and the Magneto has a coil of wire in it.

The theory behind electric current is that when a wire (a simple wire ) is passed through a magnetic field that an electric current is induced into the wire.

And conversely, when a wire is induced with an electric current it gives off a magnetic field.

The Magneto (the device that the spark plug wire comes out of) has a coil of wire in it plus a core of iron to attract or concentrate the magnetic flux lines into the wire.

The wire then gets an instantaneous jump in electricity as the magnetic field in the flywheel passes by it. The sudden increase in electricity is concentrated as high voltage which is released as a spark in the spark plug.

The timing, or the firing of the electricity to the spark plug is regulated by circuitry. This particular circuitry is activated by a small magnetic sensing switch (which looks like a small cylinder of steel tucked in with the coil). When the magnet passes by the magnetic field activates the switch. The switch then releases the coil energy into the spark plug.

The spark plug is nothing more than a glorified jumping bridge for electricity. We all are familiar with this static discharge when we scrub our feet against the floor and the reach out and touch somebody. A spark jumps when we get close, like .125 inches and closer.

The design of the spark plug is to keep the electricity isolated up to the bridge. Once the electricity from behind shoves real hard, it forces the electrons in front to jump. Kind of like getting pushed off of a bridge.

So the white part of the spark plug is non-conductive and an insulator. The metal part is isolated from the rest of the spark plug and only becomes integral when spark completes the circuit or jumps across the gap.

Obviously, sparks cause the right concentration of Oxygen and Combustible gases or even dust, to ignite. Ignition is the excited state of electrons jumping from one molecule to another. This excited state releases heat and light: we call that flame or ionized gas.

Next time we will discuss how to trouble shoot the ignition system so that you do not have to pay Smokin Joes what you just have learned…and will learn.

Use of Garden Tractor For Small areas

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:13 am

Decide Use of Garden Tractors Or Lawn Tractors

When you have a small garden the question of using the garden tractor seems like a waste of money. When a smaller lawn tractor will do your work equally well, why spend more money in buying the garden tractor? Well, there are some points in favor of both the ideas and we will take look at both sides of the coin.

Garden Tractor Vs Lawn Tractors

Lawn tractors: Smaller gardens with an area of less than 2 to 3 acres can make do with smaller tractors better known as lawn tractors. Essentially these are used for lawn mowing and no other work. If your garden is small and has only the lawn, you may continue to use the lawn tractor. Small lawn tractors have a capacity of about 4 to 6 HP.

However, if you do some gardening and have some agricultural produce, it makes sense to buy a garden tractor. The agricultural work involves loading and unloading of the agricultural inputs and outputs and it is difficult for lawn tractors to handle such loads. The attachments that can be attached to a lawn tractor are limited and it cannot definitely take the front end loader attachment that can be required for leveling the ground or flattening it.

The garden tractors are also useful to you in saving time for the other work. With lawn tractor, the time required for the same work will be much higher than the time required for equivalent work for a garden tractor. Since agricultural work is not the main business of a small landholder, it makes sense to have a tractor that can do the work quickly and get on with other jobs that you have in hand.

With a garden tractor, you can do many things that are impossible for the lawn mower to do with or without attachments. For example, you cannot use your lawn tractor for aerating the field, leveling the driveway, or hauling the firewood from far corners of your garden.

With a larger machine like a garden tractor, you can do many things that are unthinkable with small lawn tractors. The removal of stones in your garden or shifting of the stones for beautification of the garden are impossible to be done with small lawn tractor but it can be easily done with a small garden tractor and you can save lot of money in doing this.

Granted that the lawn tractor costs less money for purchase, but think of other jobs that you will be outsourcing in developing your garden and if you buy the garden tractor right at the start of your work, it will be economical to you in the longer run. If later you find it not being used completely, remember that it has saved you enough money to pay for itself and is still saving your time. Remember the wise old saying that ‘time is money’ and now you can save time and utilize it in higher yield business that you are in now.

The idle investment garden tractor can also make money for you if you rent it. If you are not the kind of person, who likes to rent his/her equipments, just remember that the garden tractor has done its work for you during the development stage of your garden and allow the garden tractor the well earned rest in your garden

So in the final analysis you will agree that using the tractor in a garden is a wise decision.

The writer Andrew Caxton publishes quite often new articles to [http://www.lawn-mowers-and-garden-tractors.com], an online magazine specialized in lawn tractors and lawnmowers. Andrew helps people to find the best solutions for different types of gardens. Reach further information on garden tractors [http://www.lawn-mowers-and-garden-tractors.com/garden-tractors.html]

Three Steps to Cooking Perfect Steak on Your Outdoor BBQ Grill

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:10 pm

If you’re like me, When you crank up that BBQ grill for the season it’s all about cooking perfect steak. I love all kinds of foods cooked on an outside bbq grill, but none says summer quite like that sweet smell of steak on the grill. For me, the results are always predictable and always pretty close to perfect. This is because I use the same process every time and I start with the end result in mind. So that’s my first tip: cooking perfect steak starts with identifying what that means to you and then learning about the basic cooking method so that you can navigate to that desired point. You’ll have to decide on the definition of perfection for yourself – that’s the fun part. But the next few paragraphs should help with the second part – learning the process and the basic cooking method that helps get you to your perfection.

It All Starts BEFORE Cooking Tenderloin!

For most carnivores, the beginning of the process towards steak nirvana is when you actually start cooking tenderloin. Unfortunately, this approach leaves out one of my best secrets for cooking perfect steak: start with the whole tenderloin. There are so many advantages to buying a whole tenderloin and breaking it down yourself. You can definitely save some money learning how to do this, and it is a lot easier than you think. When you buy the whole tenderloin, the first thing you have to do before cooking tenderloin is to remove the “chain”. The chain is the side muscle; it contains a lot of the fat and is great for use later in stews, chilis or even my favorite treat: Tenderloin Philly cheese steak. But that’s a whole other way for cooking tenderloin and beyond the scope of this article! Once you’ve removed the chain, you must remove the thick top end of the tenderloin – “the head”. This, too can be set aside and used later. What you are left with is a long tenderloin from which to cut your steaks. The most important thing to remember is to try to cut the steaks of consistent size by weight. Consistent size equals consistent cooking, which equals reliable cooking! Use a scale and aim for a consistent size somewhere between 3 and 5 oz per steak, depending on who you’re cooking for.

Do you Really Know How to Grill Beef?

If you believe most people, grilling takes no skill at all. It’s so much easier than cooking and anyone can do this with little advance planning or common knowledge. Right? This is actually one of my favorite cooking myths! Knowing correctly how to grill beef (or anything else) is essential to outdoor cooking success. Grilling is direct source conductive heat. Cooking is to grilling as driving is to flying a rocket ship. Everything happens quickly and intensely with grilling and that includes mistakes. So, let’s begin with the simple process:

  1. First, get the grill as hot as possible. Keep the lid down while heating the grill, but open when cooking. This is another common grilling mistake. If you close the lid while cooking, the method you are applying is similar to that of oven cooking. Why bother doing it outside on the grill?
  2. Brush the steak with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. You can use any other kind of seasoning or rub here, but I find that the true steak flavor comes from a good cut of meat and you don’t need anything else. You might have a different opinion so season as you see fit.
  3. Place the steak on the hot grill “show side” down – meaning the side you’d want to display on the plate goes down on the grill first.
  4. Now observe for signs of done-ness. When the steak is 75% done on one side, flip it over and cook the rest of the way.

Knowing how to grill beef is a simple process, but most people still go into it blindly. By following the steps, you will always be working towards cooking the perfect steak, rather than just cooking a steak until it has reached a safe to eat temperature and texture. The fine line of difference between acceptable and perfection make all of the difference, and with perfection so reliably reachable, why not aim high?

How Long Should the Meat Cook? Until It’s Done!

So, here we are. We always arrive at the same question. In travel, it’s: are we there yet?; and in cooking, it’s: how long should the meat cook?. Well, I have one answer to all of the how long questions: until it’s done. Yes, it really is that simple. Let the meat cook until it’s done. And now we get into the more interesting question: how do I know when it’s done? I often say that cooking is a journey – so you are a tourist, an observer on that journey. As you observe what happens to the steak during the cooking process, you will notice some predictable things happen. First, at 165 degrees, proteins coagulate. What you will see when this happens is that the steak will stiffen and shrink. You will see the sides of the tenderloin start to get brownish gray. At 320 degrees, the sugars caramelize. If you lift a side of the steak up slightly and look underneath, you will see the formation of grill marks to indicate this is happening. You will also begin to smell that nice, sweet, smell – telling you that you are cooking perfect steak and all is happening as it should. When the steak is 50-75% cooked on one side, it reaches what is termed in French culinary as “a point”. You will observe the juices start to bubble up to the red top. This indicates it is time to flip the steak, allowing it to finish its cooking on the other side. The last observation you will make to determine done-ness is the most quantitative because you will use a thermometer. Don’t cut open your steak to peer into the middle! Don’t stab at it with a fork! Both of these activities will release all of the juiciness you just worked so hard to achieve! 125-135 degrees is rare; 145-150 is medium and 160-165 is well done. So pick your temperature and remove the steak from the grill. But before serving it, let it rest for 5-10 minutes so that the juices can redistribute and run off onto the non-serving plate.

Just by understanding these simple facts about grilling, cooking perfect steak is almost a guaranteed result. Go ahead and get your own whole tenderloin today and get ready for some great outdoor eating!

Win New Customers Repeatedly/Inexpensively, Using YOUR Public Speaking For Business Marketing System

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:16 pm

Preview: Boost Your Business Marketing! Speak Professionally. Inexpensively Attract New Clients/Customers. Tested And Proven System. Get repeatedly invited, acknowledged – and even paid – as an “expert-who-speaks”. Market your products, services or yourself to numerous potential individual or group clients at once. Step up to Smarter Business Marketing(TM). This article tells you how.

Preamble

The ideas I share in this article are based on personal experiences I have had as an entrepreneur, and strategies/techniques I have developed as a result, to help me achieve my goals. Basically, I use them every now and then depending on whether I assess a particular situation or opportunity to have “good business selling potential”. They are not designed to be immediately applicable to every situation, which is why I suggest you think of ways you can adapt them to suit your unique circumstances and/or needs.

How Effective Are You At Speaking Before Important Persons Or Large Audiences About Your Business?

Do you worry or become anxious when you have to speak one-on-one with an important person or before large audiences? Do you have to market products or services to NEW people daily? Do you dread having to make those cold calls to their phones, offices or homes to try making the sale? Are you looking for a proven technique to help you increase your success rate in speaking convincingly to people AT FIRST CONTACT/MEETING?

As a serious minded business owner, you will know that successfully creating (adequate and continuous) awareness about your products/services can be quite a challenging task. I have certainly found it to be so, on a number of occasions! But, I have also always been a person with a passion for problem-solving and process simplification.

To put it another way, I am perpetually on the lookout for cheaper yet more effective way(s) of doing anything I do. My “search” eventually led me to develop for myself – about 4 years ago – what I have called the “Public Speaking for Business Marketing system(PSBM)(TM)” which is designed to enable me cost-effectively boost my marketing efforts when speaking to potential (individual or group) client audiences.

This article offers street-smart, tested and proven strategies you can use to equip yourself to succeed more often in making good and lasting impressions through WHAT YOU SAY and HOW YOU SAY IT(i.e. your communication skills) – especially at formal events like interviews, presentations, business meetings etc.

Speaking Effectively Is Important For Your Business Marketing Success

In doing your business marketing, you will find that sometimes you are required at some stage to have a one-on-one meeting with a prospect, who will want to hear from you exactly how you think your product or service will benefit him/her. In some cases the individual you have to speak with could even be representing a larger group of people, and your ability to CONVINCE him/her that you have something the group or organisation needs could win you an invitation to do a presentation to the larger group of decision makers – taking you closer to making the sale you want.

In essence, when I speak here about speaking effectively in public, I refer to both situations i.e. one in which you have to speak with an individual and that in which you have to speak to a group of people, or indeed a large audience.

Without taking the pains to think carefully through and articulate the key benefits of what you have to offer, in a way that you can SAY it to those who need to hear it, you are likely to STRUGGLE to convince your individual or group audiences that they need your service or product. Potential buyers tend to develop cold feet when the seller they are considering is unable to give them CONVINCING arguments/reasons to go ahead and buy, or make enquiries about buying from him/her.

What Is The Public Speaking for Business Marketing System(PSBM)(TM) About?

What I have called the PSBM(TM) is a “customisable” combination of innovative techniques designed to enable business owners/entrepreneurs/self-employed professionals cost-effectively boost their marketing efforts by speaking professionally to potential client audiences.

There is one key objective of developing/using a PSBM(TM) system: to promote a significant increase in the level of awareness about the speaker/marketer’s products and/or services. Another is the generation of continuous streams of patronage from existing – and new clients. These and more can be achieved, using this system, typically at a fraction of conventional marketing/ advertising costs.

The system will typically have two aspects:

a. the Public Speaking aspect

b. the Street-Smart/Electronic Marketing Strategies & Techniques aspect.

Used together, practically anyone can successfully boost his/her business marketing efficiency and effectiveness.

Who Needs To Use Public Speaking For Business Marketing(PSBM)(TM)?

Virtually every business owner is likely to have need for a cost-effective, long-term and comprehensive system like this. One that enables you to keep prospects and clients “thinking” about what you can do for them for “longer” periods – thereby increasing your chances of getting contacted by them, so you can “close” the sale.

As the preview to this article proclaims, if you can find a way to repeatedly speak professionally – in your areas of PROVEN expertise – to potential client audiences, you stand a good chance of continuously generating new business for yourself. This will happen as a result of increased awareness about, and interest (in you and/or) your services/products – which would have been triggered by your speaking activities.

How Using Public Speaking For Business Marketing(PSBM)(TM) Can Help You

“Whether you’re selling (products), services or yourself, Public Speaking is a great way to market yourself to a lot of potential clients at once ..(and) drum up new business” – Robert Dickman (Highly sought after Hollywood performance consultant, who was once asked – in year 2000 – by Time Magazine to rate the public speaking abilities of America’s Presidential candidates at the time.)

—————————————————-

Going by what I have said so far, it becomes obvious that your ability to speak effectively can yield at least two benefits:

(1) Stimulate prospects’ interest and consequently generate sales leads.

(2) Help you win MORE (sometimes even paid) speaking opportunities & new clients.

Since the ability to speaking convincingly to your prospective buyer about what you have to offer is so important to generating sales leads or closing sales, I believe it only makes sense to LEARN how to speak MORE effectively in a way that makes the above – and more – happen on a regular basis.

How/Where Can You Find Business Marketing Speaking Opportunities?

1. During your routine business marketing visits – or meetings/appointments – with individual/groups decision makers, This would be a typical one-on-one or small group situation.

2. By writing and sending out letters(or even e-mails) to decision makers introducing yourself and stating that you offer such and such talks, keynote speeches. You would make it known that you are available to speak at conferences/events/meetings/retreats etc organised by individuals or groups fitting our target audience profile.

The second opportunity offers potentially greater rewards because YOU would have been invited by them, meaning(unlike the first opportunity which is a “cold call” situation), the audience is MORE likely to be interested in what you have to say – and sell. In addition, many individuals and groups fitting your target audience profile are likely to be LOOKING for “experts” or “specialists” to deliver “talks” or “keynote speeches” at their special outings or corporate events. Your chances of making even greater marketing impact would therefore be boosted since you get to speak to a large number of potential “buyers” all at once.

But you have to make a success of the speaking outing first – and giving a good speech is only a PART of it! Learn why I say so below.

You Don’t Just Need A Speech(es) – You Need A SYSTEM!

It’s not just knowing how to speak and then going out to do so. Having a PSBM(TM) goes beyond that. In ADDITION to being a competent and effective speaker, you will also have in your arsenal other things you will do BEFORE you speak, WHILE you speak and AFTER you have spoken, that will help you achieve the business marketing results you want. It is the combination of your speaking and associated non-speaking actions that constitutes your PSBM(TM) system.

Below, I have listed some key considerations you need to make in developing a PSBM(TM) system that works for you. It does not cover every possibility – you will have to think through what needs to be added, modified or removed completely.

1. How can I learn to (write and) deliver speeches that will help me market my products, services or myself to potential customers/clients?

2. How will I get myself repeatedly invited as an “expert-who-speaks” by my target audience?

3. Is it really possible for me to get PAID as a “speaker/educator”? – and if it is, how exactly do I go about making that happen?

Suggestions: Recognised paid speaking professionals, like Burt Dubin, offer a Speaking Success System(http://www.SpeakingBizSuccess.com) that guarantees you success in the speaking business or your money back. That is of course if you really want to make speaking another dimension to your business offering(I say why not?!). Alternatively, enroll for a Public Speaking training programme at a reputable outfit. Questions you have will be answered there.

Then there is a compulsory assignment: Get yourself a copy of Dale Carnegie’s book: How TO Develop Self-Confidence & Influence People By Public Speaking AND read it over and over again, till you can virtually recall what is written on the next line while reading the preceding one. It’s an excellent book that teaches the art of public speaking in a manner that makes it REAL for the learner.

4. How do I successfully convert enquiries generated through my public speaking activities into new business/patronage?

5. What can I do to reduce the effort it would take to do all the above, so it doesn’t tell on my ability to run my business?

Suggestions: Always use low cost business marketing techniques – both offline and especially on the Internet. Prepare Edumercials (Educational Commercials) about your products or services that will be made available as printed handouts – but preferably as downloaded documents from your website, which you can invite the audience you speak to, to visit your website to request using a contact form(to which you will link follow-up autoresponders as appropriate).

Your website can do so much work for you here. It provides a very cost-effective medium through which to capture prospects. Your speaking outings, and business cards, etc that you give out to those who ask will drive traffic to your site -since you WILL have invited the recipients/audience to visit your site and get say your free report on a useful/interesting topic.

Your free website newsletter(weekly, or periodical) would ALSO be on offer for subscription by your visiting prospects, and through it, you would stay in touch with visitors and even get them to invite friends to join too, because they’re getting useful tips from you!

Convert speeches you deliver to articles and special reports, then offer them for publication online to ezine owners and free submission websites. Make sure to indicate the article is based on a speech you delivered at so and so event, since that adds to your credibility as a recognised authority on the subject. If you have not been invited to speak before, the quality of your articles- if good – can eventually influence decision makers to invite you. Just make sure that by the time they do, you have fully prepared yourself to make a success of the opportunity. In certain cases, you may discover that your writing reputation has preceded you so well, that THEY will be the ones asking you what your speaking FEES are! So, make sure you have THAT already worked out before they ask! :-)

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity” – Unknown

What You Need To ALWAYS Remember!

PLEASE NEVER FORGET THIS: You can use your PSBM(TM) system on individuals as well as on small groups or large audiences. In short, you should use your PSBM(TM) system in EVERY business marketing situation that you find it appropriate or relevant.

Of course, since speaking to more than one person offers better potential returns, you would do well to seek opportunities to make that happen more often – hence the need to announce your availability to speak on your area of expertise in as many appropriate places as possible.

The important thing is that you make sure you deliver your intended marketing message in a way that makes those who listen to you, and who fit your your target audience profile(NOT everyone will), readily recognise a need for your products and services, and willing to take action to get it by contacting you for details etc. If you can do this, your PSBM(TM) system can be correctly judged to be working well!

Summary

Business marketing is primarily about getting yourself to the top of your target customer’s consciousness and staying there for as long as necessary to make him/her “buy”. It’s a game of percentages. You can expect maybe ZERO to say 3 of every 100 persons exposed to your marketing to give you a chance to “sell” to them. That does not mean ALL of them will buy. Which is why you need to market FREQUENTLY and to as many pre-qualified prospects as possible: which means plenty of WORK for you!

Adopting a system that takes the work out of your business marketing is sure to dramatically transform the way you do business for the better. It will forever alter, positively – and powerfully – how your existing (and prospective) clients/customers see you – including the ones that do not buy from you(at first).

Are Team Sports the Best Idea As a Children’s Fitness Activity?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:17 pm

Adults, when they think of fitness and exercise, invariably imagine a well-equipped gym with cheesy music blasting over the speakers and sweaty people running on a stationary treadmill. To kids on the other hand, exercise and fitness are all about just doing what comes naturally – running about, climbing, falling, just being active. As kids grow older, team sports can be really great as a safe way to try out life skills. Team sports can help a child learn to work with other kids, share stuff, boost self-esteem, and generally fall in love with life. This is one problem here – what do you do if your child is not a natural athlete, or just doesn’t like sports?

To begin with, to not be interested in organized sports can be quite normal – it could conceivably be put down to a matter of personal taste. But you could try to understand your child’s reasons first to make sure that all is well. Perhaps there are deeper concerns that your child has, that come out of social anxiety. Preschool kids often have team sports made available to them; even so, it is not until the age of seven or so that children actually have the attention span or the mental development to actually grasp everything that goes on in a game. Kicking a ball while running or catching a ball, takes a good deal of limb-eye coordination; a child who hasn’t had the time to practice these skills properly might just not see the point. What you can do then is, you can practice at home with the child, the kind of skills that you believe she will need, playing a team sport at school. In the reassuring surroundings of home with no one else around to catch their failures, they might open up.

Your children’s fitness and health may be a great reason why you wish to have them take a team sport. But there are real reasons why they may not yet be ready for prime time. To begin with, the school sporting league can be all about the competition and the winning, and this can be off-putting to your child. Most children aren’t really appreciative of the pressure of competition until they hit the age of 12 or so You could try some places like the YMCA where they don’t keep score, to help a child to find her groove without the pressure.

Kids grow up at different rates. While one child may take up to the age of ten to gain excellent hand-eye coordination, another kid might do it at the age of six. Kids can also take time to come to terms with how hard it can be to keep up with everyone else. If your child really does need time to grow into her shoes, you can find children’s fitness activities outside of team sports. Swimming, horseback riding, golf, skate boarding, yoga, there are any number of choices for what a child can do to stay fit. Raising a child is all about finding a balance between what you decide is right for your child what the child wants for herself. With a little thought, finding the balance should not be all that hard.

Nutrition and Cats!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:11 pm

Now what do we feed our cats? Here is a subject that has so many pros and cons I could fill up 10 to 15 pages and still not come to a convincing conclusion. It boils down to commercial processed food versus natural foods plus the question do we feed our pets vitamins and supplements, too.

What really is natural pet food? The first thing that comes to mind is raw, unadulterated food. Actually mice and birds with maybe a squirrel or two thrown in are natural foods for a cat. Eating any one of these critters would provide your cat with all the proper nutrition it would need to live a long and healthful life.

According to the Pet Food Committee of the AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) “natural” as it relates to pet food is a food or ingredient derived solely from a plant, an animal or a mined source. It can either be in it’s natural state (raw) or processed by several means including cooking. The food per se remains “natural” as long as it has not been subjected to a chemical synthetic process and does not contain any additives that are chemically synthetic. Prophylene Glycol and BHA are two examples of chemically synthesized ingredients. Now don’t you feel smarter?

Commercial pet food manufacturers have set recommendations given to them by AAFCO that set the standards for providing vitamins and minerals for our pets in their food. These standards do not provide the optimum level of vitamins and minerals needed. They only provide enough needed to prevent our pets from having a vitamin and mineral deficiency.

In an ideal world all commercially prepared pet food would provide our pets with a completely healthy and balanced diet. Not even the very best canned or dry food made for cats is perfect. There is not a 100% balanced and complete food to be found anywhere, no matter what the label says. Pet food for the most part is processed by heat and as we know heat destroys vitamins and enzymes. Even frozen and freeze-dried pet foods are not the “100% perfect food” to feed your pet.

The ASPCA believes “if your pet is eating a healthful balanced diet of high quality food, then vitamin supplementation is not necessary.”

I believe that statement is true for the most part, however here in the world of humans, we try to eat right and still find it necessary to take vitamins and supplements to offset the processed foods we eat.

So what is the answer, when it comes to caring for our cats. One

thing I know for certain is that it is very important as a cat parent that you refrain from adding supplements to your cat’s diet without first consulting your vet. The workings of a cat’s internal system is very different than that of a dogs and many supplements and/or people medications can cause serious problems for a cat. It is very possible to “over dose” your pet with vitamins and other supplements. Our motto is “when in doubt” call your vet before you try any thing new.

The purpose of this chapter is not to reform any of you, but to inform and enlighten you to the options open regarding feeding your cat. First of all I will tell you the story of our 3 cats and what they eat. At our house we are very open-minded, we are aware of good nutrition for ourselves and we follow a healthy diet (with no extremes). We work every day and are in very good health. The same is true for our cats (no they don’t work, but are in very good health.) If our physician and our vet had to depend on us for support, they both would have become street people.

Miss Tiger, our 9 year old eats a variety of canned cat food (no one particular brand), she also eats different varieties of dry cat food (small amounts) plus lightly cooked chicken and lean pork, which has to have some garlic on it or she won’t eat it. She does not like beef raw or cooked. Once in awhile she has some milk and cheddar cheese (which I grate). Tiger has maintained her same weight for the last 6 years. Her teeth are perfect, no tartar build up. She gets special treats that help reduce hairball problems, a cat vitamin twice a week (ground up and added to her food) and goes to the vet once a year for her shots and a checkup for parasites (never had any). Miss Tiger is an indoor/outdoor cat.

Boots, our 14 year old eats the same diet that Miss Tiger does with one exception, he eats raw beef. He, too is one mean lean machine. His weight never varies, his teeth are perfect and he is extremely healthy. I will add he is a Tuxedo cat (black and white) with the softest fur I have ever felt and for whatever reason remains flea free. I have read that some Tuxedo cats are that way and he is one of them. He too, is an indoor/outdoor cat.

Smokey, our 8 year old, is a complex individual. Smokey was born that way; we acquired him when he was approximately 2 days old. As soon as he was old enough to eat kitten food, he wouldn’t. He would consider some cooked chicken, but cat food NEVER. Smokey was born with many physical problems, which is most likely why his mother abandoned him and a litter mate that we could not save. He could not use his back legs and we truly thought he would have to have a small 2-wheel cart attached to his back legs to help him become mobile. Our vet couldn’t give us any advice regarding the fact he would not eat cat food other than don’t feed him for a few days and then he will eat what you put down, not so. Found out later that this could have killed him, as cats cannot go with out food for any great length of time. Needless to say, we no longer have that vet. Smokey would rather starve and he did for a few days as we did try the vet’s advice (unwillingly). What was wrong with his back legs remained a mystery.

A fellow cat lover friend brought me a book on natural cat care. I am sorry I don’t know the name or author of the book, as I just copied a few pages out of it. However, there was a recipe for a Vita-Mineral mix which I mixed with baby food (sweet potatoes and corn plus baby food lamb) and a little water and put it in a kitten bottle and started feeding this to Smokey twice a day. Smokey drank this along with eating some cooked chicken and raw beef. Slowly, but surely he started using his back legs wobbly at first, but with gradual improvement. Today, Smokey is a beautiful cat, very healthy and can jump up on the couch or bed (can’t jump much higher, but that’s okay with me. What does he eat? He is a raw beef cat, but will also eat cheddar cheese (only if it is grated) and he gets a bottle every evening. I have varied the formula and I now feed him a cat vitamin (it gets ground in a small coffee grinder) that contains all the vitamins and minerals a cat needs and I mix in the baby sweet potatoes and corn plus some canned kitten food and water. As with the other two, Smokey is an indoor/outdoor cat and is one of the best mousers around. He brings us presents several times a week, as we live in Florida and have citrus trees and fruit rats (I prefer to think of them as large mice).

For those of you that might be interested in the recipe or have a need for something that is really great for your cat here is the formula. It is rather like building a mouse (your cat’s best food source.)

Cat Formula

Vitamin – Mineral Mix

1 ½ cups of brewer’s yeast

¼ kelp powder (We could only find tablets, we ground them)

1 cup lecithin granules

2 cups of wheat bran

2 cups of bone meal, calcium lactate or calcium gluconate

Mix together and store in an air tight covered container (glass or plastic). Be sure to keep it in the refrigerator. Add a teaspoon of the Vita Mix to your cat’s food twice a day. This is extremely healthy and it will do wonders for your cat.

Whether you are looking to supplement a commercial diet or just boost your cat’s nutrition a bit you need to remember that vitamins and minerals work together supporting the absorption and assimilation of each other. This means the vitamins and supplements work in tandem with each other and too much of one and not enough of another can create problems. Before you embark on changing your cat’s diet or adding anything to it consult your vet or your pet practitioner. The vitamin I am using now for all three cats is a Hartz cat vitamin that contains everything a cat needs (it’s like a multi vitamin for cats.) It can be found in most grocery stores and pet stores, the price is very reasonable.

Now back to my discussion about processed cat food. Every day, we (you and me) feed our cats either dry or canned food. We buy the best (we think) for them. We read labels, watch the ads on TV and talk to our vet. We do our best to find that 100% complete and balanced food to feed our pets.

Here’s where it get complicated, just think about this, how do “they” know it is 100% complete and balanced. There is nothing in this world, especially in the world of nutrition that is 100% complete.

Take dry food for instance. You see a label that says “complete and balanced” on your cat food. Dry food is so convenient and easy to serve and our cats seem to love it. Consider this question “why does it not grow stale?” Could the preservatives be the answer? What are they? Dry food is relatively inexpensive. Why? Could it be because it is generally made of corn or other grains? Grains are high in carbohydrates and low in valuable nutrition. Have you ever seen any meat in the packages? Did you know that dry dog food was invented 60 -70 years ago as a spin off of our cereal industry?

Buying the least expensive food for your cat will in truth cost you more in the long run. The less expensive foods have more grain and fillers and more than likely they have “by products” which you don’t even want to know about. With the better grade of cat food your pet more than likely will eat less. It will be more filling and satisfying. It will have more of the nutrients that your pet needs and you will have a healthier pet. Keep in mind that cats cannot readily digest carbohydrates; too many carbs can cause diabetes in cats. Cats are carnivores (meat eaters) dogs are omnivores (meat and plant eaters). Your pet is part of your family and a healthy pet is a happy one.

First of all nutrition is not a completed science, it is a science based on other sciences, such as chemistry, physics and biology. Have you ever heard of a scientist exclaiming to the world that everything in his or her field is 100% true? I haven’t. To claim that a pet food is 100% this or that is saying that it is perfection. Do you believe that nutritionists have gained all that knowledge? I don’t.

Feeding your pet (cat or dog) requires common sense. You use common sense in feeding your family. Think about the pet food manufacturing companies, they are in business to sell pet food and believe it or not to make money.

Granted there are some companies that do their best to produce a food that meets the high standards of the AAFCO and other organizations. Just about anyone can create and produce a commercial pet food, however nutrition is a serious business and we need to be aware of what our pets are eating

The question here is what do you do about it? Like I said in the beginning there is much to be said about feeding your pet (cat or dog) and like you, I don’t have all the answers. What I am going to do here is make a list of things to watch out for when buying processed foods and give you an idea of some “people food” that is really healthy for your cat. This is by no means the “pet food bible.” It is just my thoughts and observations from many years of many animals. Did I mention that we have 6 children that might give you an idea of the number of pets that have passed through our lives? Not only have we lived with cats and dogs throw in a few baby squirrels, horses, some birds, a few fish and a few resident snakes. Right now I have visiting possums, a raccoon, and a tortoise or two.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Refrain from buying commercial pet products that contain “animal by products” this is very scary, you have no idea what kind of by products and if they were healthy. Organ meats are acceptable.

2. Do not buy foods that have artificial coloring or preservatives like propylene glycol, sodium nitrite, BHA or BHT.

3. Realize those pet foods, even the ones that are well rated usually are cooked, cooking usually destroys most of the beneficial enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

4. Just a gentle reminder that cats are carnivores and will enjoy some fresh meat in their diets. Which means cats require a very high protein and low fat diet. Vegetables just really don’t cut it with cats, however there are a few that enjoy a nibble or two of corn and some other vegetables.

5. Do not treat your cat as a small dog. Cats need protein; they need taurine, which is important for their eyesight, cardiovascular system and their reproductive system.

6. Cats have strange eating habits, ours like to snack many times a day, others respond to a morning and evening feeding. Cats will adjust to your schedule if you just give them a chance

Our cats are a prime example of good health, we do mix processed foods along with raw and in the case of Miss Tiger her food is lightly cooked as she does not like raw meat as the boys do. Miss Tiger and Boots get a cat multi vitamin twice a week, while Smokey gets one every day in his bottle as his diet is basically devoid of food that cats should eat. Meat and cheese though great in a cat’s diet do not provide all the nutrients a cat needs to be healthy.

Should you be a person that feels you need to be cooking for your cat, there are many great recipes on the Internet for making gourmet cat meals. These are all healthy foods that will make your pet happy and make you feel good, too. Home cooked meals are fine for your cat, but in truth you will not be providing all the necessary nutrients that will keep your cat healthy. A cat’s body is unique and requires nutrients in certain proportions that we as average pet parents cannot provide. So give your cat home cooked treats once in a while, but follow your vet’s advice regarding your cat’s diet most of the time.

Use your common sense in feeding your pets, doing things in moderation never hurt anyone, besides variety is the spice of life. You enjoy new tastes and new adventures and just maybe your pets will too.

Bon Appetite!!!

Introduction

Education carried out by government and also private sector requires a real operating expenses height. Most all sector is relating to education must be bought. Book, chalk, ruler, and teaching aid readily uses for example, must be bought. Therefore, education requires cost.

Presumption like that not then is followed up with closing eyes and ear with interest places forward commercial factor than social. Education is not commodity, but effort carries out system and certain mechanism that man is able to improve; repair their/his self, can make balmy itself, and solvent of interaction as man.

Education paradigm growing in Indonesia in this XXI century step by step has started leaves aspiration of the founders this republic nation-state that is that every citizen entitled to get education that is competent. The republic founders aware to that performing of the education are addressed to makes man is humanitarianly and can make process towards at fullness of spirit hence would very ironic with situation of education these days.

The Role of the Government and Private sector

Education is responsibility of all suborder. By referring this assumption, education organizer is not merely government but also entangles the side of private sector individually and also group. Thereby, governmental hoped all members of publics responsible educate Indonesian.

Despitefully, because of limitation of cost, governmental given opportunity of it’s bigger to public to participate and develops business through education. This assumption comprehended by public by building opening school, courses, or skilled education type with facility that is better than school build and owned government. By giving supporting facilities for education that is rather differs in, rather complete, and promises makes education managed the side of private sector must be redeemed with cost that is not is cheap. So expensive education.

Indonesia has ever owned Perguruan Taman Siswa carrying out education for public? People with motivation educate public? People. Indonesia also has education system of pesantren (Islamic models) which is not collects payment which in the form of money from it’s the student. Student in pesantren modeled this salaf (classical) not only studies public sciences (like biology, physics, mathematics, language, and art) they also studies Islam science for the sake of individual and public.

Without realized already happened friction of motivation of organizer and the management of the existing education. Education organizer of private sector tends to sells dream with equipment of facility which they perform. They disregard condition of Indonesia public most doesn’t have purchasing power and energy? Power to bargain. Pupil old fellow will be given on to reality “expensive school” and “go to school for rich man children”.

Of course, must also be confessed that the school requires cost. However, collects expense of height for education is a real wrong deed; more than anything else in Constitution 1945 has expressed that any citizen [is] entitled to get education.

Capitalist: Having Under the Law

Shifts it purpose of education levying from formulated by the Republic of Indonesia founders is really peeping out suborder concern. If education only be carried out just for man who is having money, hence the biggest layer of Indonesia public? People will not have formal education. Poor people and people, who don’t have purchasing power, will yield apathetic generation. Thereby, will lose also one civilization links a nation.

Education carried out with only menitikberatkan at present financial advantage will only make man is more individually and once in a while overrules that the man basically is created autonomous. Tendency and dependency to get it’s (the capital returns will make education product to enable all ways, machiavelistical.

Other side, education system this time makes detached man from it’s (the area and sometimes abstracted from its (the community root. Properly is critical that education system this time makes educative participant not autonomous and sometimes forgets spirit to as social creature or according to opinion Aristotle’s that the man Zoon Politicon.

Semestinyalah had if education aimed at accomplishment of copartner ship standard (company) must be refused. Ideally, education must load agenda for “humanizes man” (humanization), non dehumanization. By collecting expense of height because law barium; by itself education has been transferred to accomplishment of industrial requirement. More than anything else in Indonesia, diploma is respectable reference and the only equipment to get work that is competent.

By positioning education carried out by government and also law barium private sector must, public trapped at acute dilemma. In one public sides requires education to increase it’s the humanity reality, medium on the other side no cost is small monster or endless nightmare.

Tussle between fears and desire of public to send to school it’s the children exploited by certain party sides. This condition is a real condition profits if evaluated from the aspect of business. Panic buyers are really condition hardly to the advantage of my pelaku-pela is business.

Opinion: Education is Sacral Factor

Indonesia Public till now still of opinion that formal education is equipment the only to improve; repair life, to get work with good production, good salary, and to fulfill primary requirements, beside can boost up degree. This assumption by generations and always is looked after causing peeps out assumption and places formal education as thing which sacral.

Though all formal education, vocational school is not interesting means. As it’s (the impact, vocational schools teaching is skilled becoming not draws. Vocational school is school for member of marginal public. Vocational school teaching how facing and draws up life is assumed not elite and ancient. Despitefully, vocational school is not place of for rich man children, but majored for children from poor family.

Social Lameness as poison impact goad to school which only is enjoyed by rich man children will peep out oppressed feeling and not balmy among poor people. Poor public of which cannot send to school it’s (the children will assume it as destiny which must be received and assumes it as penalization of God. Irony, of course. But this is reality when schools becomes is expensive and poor people [shall] no longer have place in school.

Minister of National Education in Indonesia for the existing likely increasingly far from nationality vision. Even with movement of schools autonomy increasingly clearly shows capitalization symptom of education. Now education is managed by using management of business that is then yields cost is sky. Expense of education more and more expensive, even impressed has become business commodity for the owner of capital (capitalist). By using pre-eminent school label, favorite school, peer school etcetera expense of education increasingly strangles poor people. Our education increasingly grinds marginal clan. Where situation of our education justice if certifiable school of that is just for they having money only?

While as man who sure is normal of public will choose best life. However, because of its (the disability and its (the kepicikan in looking at education problem, its (the objectivity is also disappears. Indonesia Public of course requires resuscitation that education is one essential part to improve; repair quality of it’s (the humanity. Of course, there is no guarantee that education will make people to become rich, influential, famous, and in command.

Cover? Conclusion

Debate of length still need to be strived before Indonesia public can look into formal education as not the only equipment to improve; repair its(the life. Public must realize formal education is not as of its (the pitch.

Resuscitation need to be trained to pebisnis. School that is till now is viewed as the only equipment which able to be used to reach for and can realize its (the aspiration is not farm to get advantage. Therefore, not righteously school utilized as means to make a living. In school still and ought to slip between idealism, so that there is no reason again to expensive of education that is with quality, complete supporting facilities, and has various facilities.

Other alternative is publicizing intensively that non diploma required but ethos and hard work, motivates to build their/his self, and desires to live in better front must be inculcated early. Public must be awaked that becoming public servant is not the price of death.

How to Overcome and Conquer the Fear of the Public Speaking Phobia

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:19 pm

Overcoming public speaking phobia: Useful techniques on how to overcome and conquer the fear of public speaking.

Do you realize that people tend to rate the fear public speaking more than death? Ironically, that means more people will prefer to be in the coffin than giving the eulogy during a funeral.

Why Do People Fear Public Speaking

Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of speaking in public and many people are known to experience it at least once in their lifetime.

According to various global surveys and statistics, the fear of public speaking ranks top among the world top ten fears, surpassing fear of spiders, fear of flying, fear of heights and often the fear of death itself.

Public speaking fear typical starts out as an increase in the speaker’s heart rate and dryness in the mouth. In extreme cases, panic, nausea, headaches and even anxiety attacks, would be experienced by the speaker before the speech starts.

Once the speech starts, the heart will start beating even more rapidly and the speaker will start hearing the tremble in their own voice. The speaker will start stuttering or start speaking rapidly. In extreme cases, the legs and even the body will visibly start to shake.

On the mental side, negative thoughts of looking foolish may start to cloud the speaker’s mind and their mind may go blank due to their overwhelming fear.

Even after a speech is over, prevalent thoughts of being embarrassed and looking stupid will occupy the mind of the speaker.

It is no wonder that most people would do anything to avoid such an experience.

How can one overcome such a powerful fear?

5 Simple Techniques for Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking Phobia

There are many techniques for overcoming the fear of public speaking and here are some helpful ways to help you conquer public speech phobia and anxiety.

1) Rationalizing your Fear

People typically are afraid of public speaking because of the fear of looking and sounding foolish in public. This fear is an innate emotional response to a threat and is a basic and natural human response.

The only way to combat the fear is to train the mind to acknowledge that fear is normal and that everyone faces this fear in varies degrees.

The common misconception about excellent public speakers is that they are born with a natural flair for public speaking and are not afraid of speaking in public, which is totally incorrect.

Excellent public speakers are people who have mentally trained themselves to accept this fear and use it to propel themselves to extraordinary heights.

2) Come Prepared

The best way to gain confidence in conquering stage fright is to come well prepared for a speech. Knowing your topic well is the key to gaining confidence.

Good communications begins with an understanding of the audience. For example, if your audience is mostly primary school children, it is advisable to keep your sentence short and your language simple.

3) Practice Makes Perfect

Before speaking in front of a large audience, start by practicing in front of a mirror. Once the initially “silliness” is overcome, try practicing in front of your best friend or a small group of close friends and family.

Having a friendly crowd who are supportive of the speaker will definitely help in boosting self confidence.

4) Breathe In, Breathe Out

Remembering to keep calm is important when giving a speech. Give yourself three breaths to relax your body and mentally count to 10 before starting the speech.

Take note to speak in slow measured breathes when speaking. This will calm your nerves by bringing in more oxygen to your brain and also works in getting the audience to follow your train of thought.

5) Find a Reason to Just Do It… Again and Again

Excellent public speakers do not become excellent by giving one speech. They understand that confidence comes by giving many speeches.

Volunteer to give presentation at your company or get involved with a local toastmasters club that will give opportunities to practice public speaking. Seek out an instructor to give you advice and to push you to improve yourself when speaking.

Only by constantly giving speeches will you overcome the fear of public speaking and with time and practice, it only gets easier.

“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.”

– Lee Iacocca

Even continuing education classes for licensed professionals and high school equivalence courses can be completed through virtual classrooms.

Methods for Distance Learning Online Education

Online education is usually web-based with a specific web site designated for the course. Supplemental materials, such as software, may also be part of certain online courses. Students visit the course web site to complete the posted assignments and take tests. Instructors and students communicate through email and chat rooms. Sometimes virtual lectures and discussions are part of online coursework. Students can attend virtual classrooms to complete their education and some colleges even have virtual graduation ceremonies.

Types of Students Who Pursue Distance Learning Online Education

Many different students from all over the world participate in distance learning online education opportunities. Some students work and attend classes online during their free time. Other students live in remote areas where local colleges do not exist. Still other students choose to combine online courses with traditional classes for what is known as a blended learning experience. Academic leader James Sherwood, Ph.D. and dean of University Extension, the continuing education branch of The University of California at Berkley states that, “Coming out of World War II and getting into the 60′s and 70′s there was a kind of stigma associated with distance education. That has certainly changed.” Because of technological advances and online resources, distance education has improved and offers an equivalent opportunity to traditional education.

Faculty Perspective of Distance Learning Online Education. Dr. Michael Otaigbe of Strayer University in Virginia has taught courses both in person and online at the same college. His opinion is that online classes generate an unexpected level of motivation, saying, “Online, I have the freedom to require contributions. Every week, my students have to submit essays and participate in group discussions. I get a better sense of the learning process.” He also finds that online students come from all over the world and have unique contributions that benefit the other students.

Online Education Distance Learning Association in the US. Several distance learning associations exist within the United States that offer additional information about taking classes online for prospective students.

The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA). The USDLA is a non-profit association that promotes the development and application of online distance learning for education and training purposes. The USDLA encourages distance learning for grades K-12, college and higher education, corporate training, continuing education, government training and military training. Further, the USDLA supported the implementation of the Snowe-Rockefeller Amendment to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, as well as other legislation in 1997 that was introduced by Kennedy and Snowe.

The Distance and Education Training Council (DETC). The DETC is a non-profit educational association that is a central hub of information about distance study and the correspondence learning field.

Federal Government Distance Learning Association (FGDLA). The FGDLA is also a non-profit association. The FGDLA was formed to promote development and application of distance learning programs. The Association also acts to foster understanding and collaboration among the people involved in education and training within the federal government.

Covering Costs for Distance Learning Online Education Programs

Financial aid is available to online students, just as it is for traditional students. Online students can apply for applicable state and government financial aid, Stafford loans, student loans, tuition reimbursement and scholarships to cover costs for cyber classes. Also, virtual students save money on transportation and housing. Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board, said, “The College Board continues to advocate for need-based aid, so that students can have the opportunity to benefit from college education.”

National and international strides are being made everyday in distance learning online education. Rep. Vernon J. Ehlers, R-Mich., introduced legislation to scientifically scrutinize online learning. The Independent Study of Distance Education Act of 2007 directs the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a study that would compare classroom instruction with distance learning programs. Colleges such as the University of Wyoming are experimenting with gaming as a form of teaching online education. Consider that the dynamic nature and convenience of online education has attracted about 3.2 million people to take a distance learning course in the past year. Distance learning online education programs are an effective way to achieve higher education.

Do You REALLY Want to Enter That New Market?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:28 pm

Contemplating taking an existing or new product / service into a

new market? A systematic analysis of 14 critical market segment

attributes should be considered before any additional company

resources are applied to any new market pursuit.

Sometimes it is obvious that entering a new market is a “no

brainer” or it is perceived as the “right thing to do” because

a competitor has taken the plunge or a handful of existing

product or service users, within that market segment, are

asking for your market participation.

Taking on a new market is an integrative decision process,

cutting across a broad number of competitive issues, internal

company functions and various targeted organizational entities.

A decision of this magnitude should not be taken lightly

because of the overall affect it can have on the total direction

of your company and prudent use of limited resources.

The cost of making a wrong decision here can be significant

both in actual capital outlays and the opportunity costs

realized of NOT pursuing another, “better” market alternative.

In Al Ries and Jack Trout’s, “The 22 Immutable Laws of

Marketing”, being FIRST in a new market is everything, first is

best! Sometimes deciding to venture into a new market segment

just because a competitor did only makes the same decision one

of duplicate failure.

Anyone who has ever been involved in sales management knows that

sales personnel have a tendency to sell what they don’t have …

always trying to solve all of every customer’s problems no

matter whether it makes financial sense for the company they

represent or not. Marketing managers also have to learn to

systematically justify entering a new market not because a

handful of existing market participants have asked them to

enter their market.

The first step in evaluating the overall merit of entering a new

market should be to discuss and determine the applicability of

these 14 market segment attributes:

14 Critical Market Segment Attributes

1) The number of products/ services required to effectively

compete:

* Ideally the more “full service” you can be the better your

chances of success

* Customers prefer “one-stop shopping”, if you cannot provide

the complete customer solution package, they have little

reason to switch suppliers

2) Capital required to effectively compete:

* Understand your costs to enter a new market before you assume

your revenues

* Sales projections are typically too high and cost estimates

too low in new business ventures

3) Long term sales potential:

* Accelerating advances in technology reduces long term customer

retention possibilities. In many markets customer needs are

constantly changing.

* Priority should always be give to retention of existing, short

term revenue streams, ultimately the best means to fund

potential long term growth

4) Relative Profitability:

* Is return on investment greater via a new product or pursuing

another market?

* It is always less costly to grow profits from existing

customers in existing markets than to pursue new customers in

new markets

5) Ease of product distribution:

* New markets are often best penetrated with non traditional

distribution/ sales representation

* Does this potential market “fit” with your current

distribution structures?

6) Post sale service requirements:

* Product/ service information demands of new market customers

can require more and new forms of post sale customer service

* Technical support for state-of-the-art product/ service

offerings can be in limited supply and very costly, difficult

to staff

7) Degree of customer loyalty:

* Every market has a varying degree of customer loyalty

depending on number and quality of competitive product/

service offerings

* Do key targeted users within the new market buy on product/

service value or well established relationships with existing

suppliers?

8) Time required to get into the market:

* Product/ service “life cycles” in some industries last only a

couple of months

* Can your company develop, test, certify and fill distribution

channels of a short life cycle product/ service within the

time frame required?

9) Anticipated competitive response:

* New market entrants are greeted with new competitive marketing

tactics upon entry by established suppliers who seek retention

of existing market share

* Will existing pricing levels remain once you have entered the

market?

* How will market pricing degradation eventually affect your

margins and ROI?

10) Number of viable competitors:

* If there are a relatively few number of viable competitors

participating within the targeted market, it may more than

justify your market entry

* Sometimes it is less expensive to acquire an existing,

resource limited, market participant than try to take market

share with a new approach

11) Ability to maintain a technical advantage:

* Can you protect your technology within the time frame required

to cover your new market entry investment?

* Maintaining technical advantages requires quality, technical

talent. If your current technical staff is over burdened or

limited you will not compete

12) Fit with existing company resources:

* Can your company absorb the financial, emotional and physical

changes required to effectively compete in the new market?

* New markets often require new, certainly more, talent and

personnel

13) Fit with established customer perceptions:

* How will your existing customers be affected by your pursuit

of a new market and new customer base?

* It is critical to define and evaluate your existing customer’s

perceptions of all your major strategic moves

14) Financial status of key targeted customers and market share

mix:

* Are key targeted customers financially stable?

* Is there a diverse mix of new market participant market

shares?

The justification of entry into a new market segment involves

effectively identifying viable competitors, relevant target

market attributes, competitor and key customer market shares

while correctly defining your company’s current financial,

technical and human resources.

For marketing and sales management this 14 market attribute

checklist is more intuitive than measurable. However, it is an

excellent means to initially come to a “pass or fail” decision

before any additional resources are applied to any market

expansion effort. If you want to further quantify this analysis

you can numerically weight each market attribute with your own

specific market attribute priorities and give numerical

“grades” to any or all new market entry candidates to calculate

a weighted value for any new market.

Like trying to address any noteworthy marketing challenge,

whatever you can do to quantify and measure your potential

marketing alternatives, the more relevant your analysis, the

better your management decisions will be.

How to Choose a Safe Childcare Network

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:08 pm

Whether working, attending school, or simply in need of temporary childcare services, it is extremely important to find the venues and networks that can make the experience an extremely positive one for everyone involved.

Choose a Center You Can Trust

When considering a home childcare center, there will typically be one or two adults in attendance. It’s best they have a limited number of children, either their own, or those of clients so that your child or children can receive quality attention. Make sure you visibly check and approve their licensing and that home rules and regulations are in place and adhered to by everyone.

Traditional daycare centers are usually managed by multiple teachers and will take in children of all ages. These venues are registered by the state. The same level of scrutiny should apply to these venues as a home childcare business.

Make a Thorough Evaluation of Your Network

Familiarizing yourself with the center’s daily routines should always follow your choice of childcare venues. Should you bring snacks for your child or are they provided. Are there special clothes you need to bring? The childcare provider can provide you with a list of the things you should, and shouldn’t bring each day.

It’s not bad to have a back up plan for either of the childcare networks you choose. For simple things like if your get sick, a home childcare center works perfect. On the other hand, a full service center might offer more flexibility to fit your schedule and your family’s needs.

Interview Multiple Providers

Your research will no doubt reveal that childcare centers approach their rules differently. Some will have strict rules while others may not, such as flexibility in scheduling. Other childcare centers may have a more structured approach when it comes to education. So, it becomes extremely beneficial to examine as many options as possible.

Evaluate a Center with an Open Mind

Look closely at the staff and how well they treat the children. Do you observe a lot of patience and flexibility in their approach? Ask yourself if the center will be able to meet your child’s emotional and developmental needs.

Does the facility provide safe indoor and outdoor areas along with appropriate equipment? Are the bathrooms sanitary and do they provide areas for changing diapers? Are the rooms designed with bright and engaging colors?

Observe how the tables are made. Do they have rounded corners? Are first aid kits and snacks available for the children? Are cleaning material and medicines out of the reach of the children?

There are a thousand variables to consider. Knowing your child is being well taken care of by qualified professionals who have received proper early childcare training can go a long way in making sure you start and end your day with peace of mind.

Colin McLean writes about early childcare training and programs for Everest College. Find out how a quality education can help put you on the path to success.

Politics Are a Hot Topic in Chicago

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:25 am

Politics have been a part of Chicago for some time. By politics we mean the heated politics of Chicago. From the University of Chicago, which has seen some great political leaders, to the leaders of Chicago in the past who were known to have mob connections, Chicago has been a political firecracker for some time.

They say that the two things you should never discuss are politics and religion, but that does not stop a lot of the talk of the heated politics of Chicago. Many people want to know Chicago politics inside and out, and want to know what the big news for the city’s political scene is. This love for the Chicago political scene is something many in the city share. However, finding people to talk to about politics can be extremely difficult to do.

Just as the history of Chicago has been very diverse, so have its political views. The politics of Chicago have not only been heated, but have led to impacts in the nation that is here today. They have also laid the groundwork to a number of events that would be factors in the world as a whole as a well. Some of the newer cities of the United States have to give thanks to some of the greater minds and political views of the Windy City.

In recent years, some of the greats in the corporate world and political world have sought places in the Southwestern United States. Some have seen this as a means of fleeing the fires that they fueled in Chicago, other have merely seen this as them wanting to have a transition to the next stage of their lives. The heated politics of Chicago can literally eat someone alive and spit out the remains without a second thought. That is part of what makes Chicago one of the political centers and also one of the hot spots for change in the Midwest.

Many have seen the legendary Al Capone as a nightmare in the streets of Chicago, and have seen how he would consume the legal system. One can’t say Capone’s name though without mentioning how he was the catalyst in the creation of the FBI. This level of corruption that Capone brought forth also instigated a higher level of how politics were viewed in Chicago and how the dirty politicians were dealt with. In the bluntest of terms, just as the Chicago sports fans won’t tolerate verbal jabs; the political arena of Chicago is no different.

Some have seen that Chicago is one of the harder roads for politicians, yet it is also a road that had garnered a higher level of respect of the politicians that have surfaced from the torrents of the political world there. This has been a city that has shown what a cut throat environment politics can be and also where a politician can be revered by those that support them.

The author runs a website about Chicago politics. This has been truer with the rich political history that Chicago offers and the direct impact it has had on both the state and Federal government.
